Because most developing countries depend heavily on agriculture, the effects of global warming on productive croplands are likely to threaten both the welfare of the population and the economic development of the countries. Tropical regions in the developing world are particularly vulnerable to potential damage from environmental changes because the poor soils that cover large areas of these regions already have made much of the land unusable for agriculture.

The Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) announces the 2010 conference call at Egerton University, Njoro, Kenya. The conference will involve plenary sessions, with presentations from renowned international scientists on topics covering recent advances in knowledge on climate change adaptation in the dry lands. Other events include roundtable discussions involving the scientific community and representatives of agencies working with pastoral communities as well as members of vulnerable communities in the dry lands. {jathumbnail off}

Research to Policy for Adaptation

RPA_logo RPA is a project being implemented by researchers investigating climate change adaptation options as part of the Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) programme.The project aims to increase the use of research processes and findings in the formulation of adaptation polices in Africa. To achieve this, RPA is helping to build researchers’ capacity to understand and influence policy processes around adaptation.

How is climate change affecting agriculture and food security in Africa? How are farmers adapting to these changes?  FAC is already working on adaptation research related to smallholder agriculture and is launching a new 'climate change' research theme this year.

Climate Change Adaptation Policy Processes

Two FAC members (Blessings Chinsinga and Lydia Ndirangu) are involved in collaborative research on "Linking African Researchers with Adaptation Policy Spaces". This project aims to increase the ability of partners in Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) programme in East Africa to understand climate change adaptation policy processes at local and national scales.
